Hattah Lakes and the Murray - Sunset National Parks - Cup Weekend

Dates: 4th to the 7th November 2017

Location: North Western Victoria - Victoria’s Deserts

Trip Leader: Lloyd Hetrick

Description

There will be two options for this trip depending on the conditions and access into the Hattah - Kulkyne National Park.

Trip Standard: Easy to Medium - all vehicles must have low range and high clearance is advisable if doing Option 2 where there will be lots of sand driving. Its advisable to of completed your driver training but it is not essential

Option 1

The plan is to spend two nights Saturday and Sunday camped on the Murray and do two day trips into the Hattah - Kulkyne National Park doing some nature of the nature trail walks. Then pack up camp and head into the Murray - Sunset National Park on the Monday and spending a day exploring the park before finding a camp site near the Pink Lakes then on the Tuesday heading to and exploring the area around the lakes before heading home.

Day 1. Meeting place will be at Hattah on the Calder Hwy where we will then head off into the National Park visiting the Visitors centre and                         exploring the southern part of the park on the way through the park to the Murray - Kulkyne Park on the banks of the Murray where we will find a camp site. It is not intended that this will be a long day and there should be plenty of time for a swim or some fishing in the Murray at the end of the day - note a NSW fishing licence is required to fish in the Murray and can be purchased at the Hattah or Wemen stores. This camp will be a base camp so on:

Day 2. We will do a day trip into the Hattah Lakes National Park exploring the northern section, again this should not be along day.

Day 3. We will pack up camp and head into the Murray - Sunset National Park and explore the northeastern section of the park before finding a camp site on the way towards the Pink Lakes.

Day 4. The morning will be spent exploring the area around the Pink Lakes before heading to Underbool for a coffee and/or some lunch and then heading home.

Fuel is available at Ouyen, Underbool and at Wemen. - a full tank when leaving Ouyen should be ample to get to Underbool.

There are no toilet facilities in the camp areas on the Murray - bring a shovel.

Option 2. (only if Hattah Lakes is not accessible)

The plan is to do overnight camps and travel each day. We will travel through the eastern part of the Wyperfeld National Park, pass through and fuel up at Underbool before heading into the Murray - Sunset National Park pass the Pink Lakes and then across to the border track and then follow the border track Sturt Hwy before heading home. This trip follows follows the Border Track Trip in Hema’s 4WD Adventures book.

Day 1. Meet in Hopetoun on the Henty Hwy from where we will then head off into the Wyperfeld National Park winding our way through the eastern section around the Wirrengren Plain to Underbool for a cool drink and where we will top up with fuel and then to head to the Pink Lakes with the aim of camping at the Lake Becking or Mt Crozier Campsites.

Day 2. Take the Sunset Track to the Border Track making camp in the Pheenys Track campsite.

Day 3. Follow the Border track up to the Murray and then follow the track along the Murray towards Kulnine East near where we will camp.

Day 4. Pack up camp and following the tracks near the river head into Mildura for a coffee before heading home.

Fuel is available at Hopetoun, Underbool and in Renmark (60km roundtrip back to the track)

There are toilet facilities at all but the last campsite.

General notes for both trips:
